Children's Literacy Center donates books to fight illiteracy in Colorado

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - We sat down with program manager of the Pikes Peak Region and spokesperson from the Children's Literacy Center Sandy McGraw to discuss their mission to improve literacy in Colorado.

McGraw tells us that in Colorado there are 27,000 children in third grade alone reading below their grade level.

There’s nothing like a dog to get kids to enjoy reading — and to be driven to excel. That’s how it is in Woodland Park at the Children’s Literacy Center.

A recent visit to the center, where the satellite location is the Woodland Park library, has kids excited about reading with Brandy, the Golden Retriever therapy dog, as the listener, true or not.

The Arena Athletic Performance Center’s Trevor and Kitsen Goldberg donated boxes of books collected at their National Book Lover’s Day promotion to Ann Sulley from the Children’s Literacy Center. The Arena is an athletic training facility for athletes of any age and sport. The Children’s Literacy Center, a free one-on-one tutoring program, depends on donations from Colorado communities.
